Kattasche is a small artisan run leather studio on the South Coast of NSW combining heritage craft with vibrant colours and minimalist design. With a background in theatre design and costume props Katja fell in love with leather craft in costume rooms. She has been building this studio practice for the past two years and offers a small collection of leather objects including notebooks, clutches and larger bags.
Her skills as a costume designer and leather artisan best come together when she gets the chance to create a bespoke object and every order offers an opportunity to evolve. Her work embraces the unique features of Australian vegetable tanned bovine, kangaroo and cane toad leather.
Every piece is entirely cut, dyed, saddle stitched and finished by hand. The hand dyeing has allows her to create a unique palette currently not offered on the drum dyed market. In 2020 a Create NSW Grant enabled her to undertake some training with master craftsman Peter Nitz in Zurich. Katja is a member of CRAFT Victoria.
Katja is a set and costume designer/ maker, artist, artisan and has been living and working in Australia since 2002. Originally from Germany, she trained in theatre design at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art& Design in London.
For the past 18 years she has been living and working in Australia and has collaborated on a wide range of projects in film, performing and visual arts as well as in events. Designing, making things and most of all working with other creative minds are her greatest passion.
