Leon Straker's sculpting arises from his need to create. He is drawn to the organic shapes and textures of wood, embracing their 'imperfections' and working in sympathy with the raw material to create a collaborative artefact that provides the owner with a functional celebration of natural wood. His sculptures are created with a range of saws, chisels and abrasive tools - and all finished with hours of hand sanding and natural oils to create a tactile finish.
Leon’s passion for art was nurtured by his artist mother and has been expressed over the years through photography, clothes design, garden design, furniture and sculpture. His recent focus has been on wood sculpture and he has sculpted in Perth, Adelaide and is now in Sydney.
In 2020 he held his first exhibition as part of the South Australian Living Artists event. This was a mainly online exhibition due to COVID but also included a limited open studio.
Over the summer of 2020/2021 he exhibited his work at the Fleurieu Arthouse gallery. Set in the McLaren Vale wine region this gallery shows works by artists from around Australia.
In 2021 he moved to Sydney in time for another COVID lockdown and has now established a workspace to re-engage with sculpting.
