The Tenebrio Molitor seried of brooches in stainless steel were developed from an interest in the power of language and symbols to direct our thinking about bodies, through the lens of gender, and X and Y chromosomes. The history of identifying the X and Y chromosomes, for female and male, is founded on the work of Nettie Stevens, who at Bryn Mawr College in 1905 was the first to conclude that the X and Y chromosomes accounted for sex determination.
The design concept for the Tenebrio molitor – (mealworm beetle) series morphs the X and Y shapes into new forms reflecting contemporary notions of gender as fluid and determined by the individual.
