GIllian's art practice is heavily influenced by the Sydney coastline. She walks along the coast regularly and the sky, ocean and land that rises up to meet them is a source of fascination – how the water and wind batter the layers of ancient sandstone and lava, creating exquisite, intricate patterns and striations.

Lockdown gave Gillian time to explore Nerikomi, a Japanese influenced method of cutting, layering and stacking pieces of coloured clay. It is a way of drawing into (as opposed to onto) the clay body, and ending up with a three dimensional kaleidoscope of patterns which are sliced and joined together, rather like a jigsaw puzzle. The resultant vessels mimic the layers of volcanic lava and sandstone, and the movement of the ocean, and express my view of our coastline.

Gillian Hodes was born in Zvishavane, a small rural town in Zimbabwe.  She grew up immersed in the African bush, surrounded by Shona sculpture and African art.  Her schooling in Harare, Zimbabwe was followed by University in Cape Town, South Africa.

In 1999, she emigrated to Sydney, Australia with her family. She left the corporate world a few years ago in pursuit of the life of an artist, studying both sculpture at the National Art School and ceramics at Northern Beaches TAFE.
Gillian has exhibited widely across Sydney, new South Wales regional galleries and interstate.

She has been the recipient of many awards including most recently second prize in Wallenberg Portrait Competition 2020 (for a sculpture) and the  Studio Artist at Australian Design Centre, for the Australian Ceramics Open Studios (ACOS) in 2018.
